Michelangelo's David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, depicting the Biblical hero David before his battle with Goliath. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, it stands at an impressive height of 5.17 meters (17 feet). The statue is renowned for its anatomical accuracy, heroic posture, and intense expression.
Originally commissioned for the Florence Cathedral, David was instead placed in the Piazza della Signoria, a prominent public square, symbolizing Florentine liberty and defiance.
