"The Armada Portrait" of Elizabeth I, circa 1588

Elizabeth I (1533-1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. She was the last monarch of the House of Tudor.

Her reign, known as the Elizabethan era, saw the flourishing of English drama and poetry (under figures like Shakespeare and Marlowe) and the English Renaissance. England also became a significant naval power during her reign, with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 being a pivotal moment.

Known as the "Virgin Queen," Elizabeth never married, using her unmarried status as a political tool to maintain independence and foster alliances. Her reign was characterized by religious settlement, political intrigue, and exploration.
